The Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (HICC) is pleased to announce the launch of the $1 billion direct delivery stream of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF).
Announced in Budget 2024, the CHIF is a $6 billion fund that aims to accelerate new construction, rehabilitation and expansion of housing-enabling drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste infrastructure, directly supporting the creation of new housing supply and improved densification. This investment is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to help address the impacts of the housing crisis on communities of all sizes across Canada.
HICC will deliver up to $1 billion over eight years directly to eligible recipients, such as municipalities and Indigenous communities, to address pressing infrastructure needs and to enable more housing.
The CHIF will soon open its direct-delivery intake funding portal and begin accepting projects under a continuous intake stream where applications may be submitted at any time while the intake remains open. Projects may be pulled from the HICC Funding Portal for assessment in batches at various times during the intake period, with projects being recommended for approval based on project quality prior to the intake closing.
In recognition of the unique housing and infrastructure needs in Indigenous communities, and to support Indigenous-led projects, at least 10% of the funding envelope will be dedicated to eligible Indigenous recipients. An Indigenous Applicant Guide is currently being finalized and will be available on the CHIF Website as soon as the application portal opens.
